What does organic mean?

Organic cotton is farmed naturally, avoiding harmful pesticides and other chemicals. This process is safer and cleaner for the environment. Being organic means organic agriculture is not exposing our people, soil,air and water to these harsh chemicals.

We carefully select fabrics that are made from certified organic cotton yarn which has received organic certification by Control Union (formerly SKAL). Certification assures you that the product is genuine and is grown, manufactured and approved by the Control Union’s organic standards.

The dyes used on all print designs are water-based and environmentally friendly.

What are the impacts of conventional cotton?

Conventional cotton farming is one of the most heavily sprayed and chemically reliant industries in the world – it is sprayed with harmful pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. The production of conventional cotton pollutes our water, air and land. It also endangers the health of farmers and the local farming community. Some conventional cotton products use finishes such as formaldehyde, caustic soda, sulphuric acid, and harsh chemical dyes. These chemicals can cause skin irritations in particular on babies.

Why is Organic so expensive?

There are a few reasons why there seems to be a premium on the cost of Organic products. All organic cotton and bamboo fibres for textiles are grown internationally. We keep an eye on local cotton producers to see if any will go organic. We would love to source organic cotton fabric locally and to manufacture locally, one of our long term aims.

Demand for products and supply of fabric is still low, so manufacturing is only limited. Manufacturers who are serious about adhering to high ethical and organic standards pay extra for licencing and certification and the right to use logos such as GOTS, OekoTex and IVN Best. This sets their products at a premium.
